I've done the Tamarind Falls hike three times now, and what really makes or breaks the experience is your footwear choice. The first time I went, I wore regular running shoes and ended up sliding all over the place near the bigger pools. The second time I borrowed proper hiking boots with good grip and it was night and day. The rocks are mossy and wet year round, so I'd recommend something like Merrell or Keen trail shoes with deep treads. Bring a spare pair of sandals or water shoes for when you actually want to swim or wade into the pools, because hiking back down with wet shoes is miserable.

Another thing nobody tells you is that the "seven cascades" aren't fully accessible in a straight line. You have to bushwhack a bit between some of them, especially between the fourth and fifth falls. There's no official path there, just faint trails locals have cut through. I got turned around my first time and ended up at the wrong pool. If you're not with a guide, download the AllTrails map offline before you go because cell service is spotty once you drop into the gorge.

Also, the water temperature is colder than you'd think for Mauritius. Don't go in expecting a warm bath. It's refreshing on a hot day but can catch you off guard if you're just planning to jump straight in. I'd say pack a light towel and maybe a quick-dry shirt for after.

Dude the AllTrails tip is clutch. I went with a friend who swore we could just follow the river and we ended up lost for like an hour trying to find the 5th fall. Also yeah the water temp was a shock—I was expecting it to be warm after all that hiking and my whole body tensed up when I jumped in lol. Def bringing water shoes next time, that wet shoe hike back is brutal
