I've been hiking Montagne des Signaux for years, and one thing that often gets overlooked is how the experience changes with the seasons. Most people go in the dry months, but I actually prefer heading up right after a heavy rain in summer. The trail gets slick in spots, so you need proper grip on your shoes, but the payoff is incredible. The air clears of dust, and the view of Port Louis becomes crystal sharp. On one of those post-storm afternoons last February, I could see all the way to Le Morne on the southwest coast, which normally gets hazy.

Another practical tip: start your hike around 3:30 PM instead of early morning. You'll catch the heat mellowing out, and the golden hour light at the summit is unmatched. The trail is well marked but has some steep sections where you'll want to take your time. I always carry a small flashlight because I've lingered too long watching the sunset more than once and had to descend in twilight. The path isn't dangerous at night, but it's easier with a light.

If you're into birds, keep an eye out for the Mauritius kestrel. I spotted one perched on a rock about halfway up last November. It was a lucky moment, but it made the whole climb feel special. The mountain has a quiet, ancient energy that's hard to describe. It's not just a viewpoint, it's a place where you can feel the island's history in the stone under your feet.
