Inside Out 2 did something I was not ready for.
The first film taught children that sadness is valid. The sequel teaches teenagers that anxiety is not the enemy. That sounds simple on paper. On screen, it wrecked me.
Riley is 13 now and Pixar understood the assignment: puberty is not funny. It is a hostile takeover. New emotions move in - Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui - and they do not knock. They redecorate.
Maya Hawke voicing Anxiety is inspired casting. She plays her not as a villain but as a protector who went too far. Anxiety does not want to hurt Riley. She wants to prevent Riley from being hurt. The difference between those two things is the entire emotional thesis of the film.
The scene where Anxiety builds a version of Riley based entirely on fear of what other people think - replacing her core beliefs one by one until the real Riley is locked away watching a stranger operate her body - that is not animation. That is therapy in Dolby surround.
Every adult watching this will recognize the moment. The moment you stopped being yourself and started being the version of yourself that you thought the world wanted.
Pixar made a film for 13-year-olds that every 35-year-old needs to see.
Rating: 9.5/10. Bring the whole family. Cry separately.
