The Makindes first arrived in Canada in 2017 with their one-year-old daughter, who was born in Nigeria, crossing into the country from the United States via Roxham Road in Quebec. They relocated to Ottawa in 2018.
Adepeju Makinde explained that the family left Nigeria to escape pressure from her husband's relatives to perform a genital cutting procedure on their young daughter.
Upon their arrival in Canada, their application for refugee status was denied following a hearing. Officials suggested that the family had alternatives to coming to Canada, such as relocating to another part of Nigeria.
After their appeals were also denied, the family submitted an application for permanent residency in Canada based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. They have been waiting for almost three years, since October 2021, for a decision.
