Hello Neighbors,

Ever heard the term "Human Trafficking?"
Well ancient slave trade, especially from Africa to the Western world founded the basis for modern Human trafficking.

Dating as far back as the 16th and 17th centuries, it is estimated that over 15 million Africans were forcefully taken from their homes and families, friends and relations over the Athlantic eith European colonies.

To this day, certain regions across Africa, especially those that share borders with the Athlantic, have sites associated with the slave trade that have become places of pilgrimage for visitors from all over the world, many of whom are descended from ancestors that were displaced by slavery.

In today's edition of the #DiscoverAfrica and #VisitAfrica writing season we will be looking at a few of the continent's top slave trade ports and routes across the continent.

1. Ghana: Situated in the Western part of Africa, Ghana is one of the ancient hubs and routes of ancient African slave trade. It has recorded recently the visit of prominent individuals from America coming over to trace their ancestral descent.

Places known as active slave trade ports in Ghana included, Cape coast fort, Elmina Castle, Donko Nsuo and Salaga. Many of these place were temporal sites where slaves were housed by their masters until it was time to sell or transport them off across the boisterous sea.


2. Senegal: One major hub and fort for slave trade in Senagal is the Île de Gorée, or Goree Island which is located just off the Dakar coast, the island. Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) was another important stop point for the Portuguese colony. It hold physical structures like dungeons and prisons were slaves were remanded until it was time to sell or ship them off.

The modern-day city of Ouidah otherwise known as Musee d'Histoire d'Ouidah once housed slaved an old Portuguese fort, tells the story of the Beninese slave trade.

If you were to visit modern day Ouidah, you will be able to walk down the Route des Esclaves, the 2.5-mile road down which slaves would take their final walk to the beach and waiting ships. Fetishes, statues, and memorials have been erected along the way.

4. The Gambia made it to this list because of the inspiring story of Kunta Kinte, a young man sold into slavery in the 18th century. Juffureh was the home village of Kunta Kinteh. The Kinteh Island with its slave dungeon also exists as a memorial of the young man that present in Albreda.

Albreda in Gambia happens to be the outpost for slaves erected by the French colonies. Monuments like the National Museum of Albreda is dedicated to slavery and includes an exhibition detailing the Roots connection and a replica slave ship.
