I'm a frontend-focused developer based in Accra, and I'll echo what others have said but add something I haven't seen mentioned yet: the rise of no-code and low-code platforms is creating a weird niche for junior devs here.
Companies, especially older businesses that are just now digitizing, are hiring for "developers" who actually spend half their time on tools like Retool or FlutterFlow. I got my first real gig six months ago because a logistics company needed someone who could glue together their existing spreadsheets with a simple internal dashboard. They didn't need a React expert; they needed someone who understood logic and data flow. I built it mostly in Retool with custom scripts when needed. It's not glamorous, but it paid the bills and got me a real reference.
On the traditional stack side, I'm seeing a lot of demand for React Native and Flutter right now. There are so many local startups building mobile-first apps for everything from farming to ride-hailing. Python with FastAPI or Node.js on the backend. Django seems less popular for new projects. Also, surprisingly, a lot of junior roles I see advertised still ask for PHP (Laravel). It's not exciting, but there's a ton of legacy code to maintain for e-commerce and booking systems.
My honest advice: don't just focus on the hottest framework. Go to local meetups or tech hubs. I got my gig because I helped someone debug a Shopify integration at a coworking space. Relationships beat resumes every time in this market right now.
