I'll throw another one into the ring that's less obvious but just as powerful: *The Gift of Fear* by Gavin de Becker. Most people see it as a self-defense book, but I read it as a guide to understanding my own intuition and the subtle ways we ignore red flags in everyday life. De Becker is a security expert who works with stalking and threat assessment cases, but he breaks down how fear is actually a gift we're trained to suppress.

I remember reading the chapter on "survival signals" and realizing I'd ignored so many gut feelings in relationships and work decisions over the years. It made me stop second-guessing that quiet voice when something felt off. The book isn't about paranoia - it's about paying attention. After reading it, I became way more aware of how people use charm or urgency to bypass my judgment. That skill alone has saved me from at least two bad professional partnerships and one friendship that was going nowhere good.

Everyone should read it because it strips away the romanticized idea that we have to be polite at the expense of our safety or peace. It's practical, with real examples from case files. You'll never look at a stranger's smile or a boss's flattery the same way again. And honestly? It made me a lot less anxious because I stopped blaming myself for noticing things felt wrong.

ugh this book CHANGED me. I read it years ago after a bad situation where I literally ignored every single red flag because I didn't want to be rude. The part about how we're conditioned to override our own instincts for politeness... that hit way too close to home. I still think about the 'charm vs character' distinction all the time when meeting new people. Glad I'm not the only one who got obsessed with this one lol
