I’ll go first. The creative project I’m most proud of is a hand-built wooden bookshelf I designed and built from scratch in my garage about three years ago. It wasn’t just any bookshelf - it’s a modular, hexagon-shaped unit that interlocks like a honeycomb. What made it special is that I had zero woodworking experience before that project. I bought a used circular saw off Craigslist, watched about 20 hours of YouTube tutorials, and made every mistake in the book. I cut pieces too short, used the wrong angle, and even split a board by screwing too close to the edge. But I kept going.
The reason it matters to me isn’t because it’s perfect - it’s not. It’s because every time I look at it, I see a record of my own learning. Each joint tells a story. The slightly crooked middle hexagon is the one I had to redo three times. The stain is uneven in places where I got impatient. But my kids pile their favorite books in those cubbies, and my wife actually asked me to build a second one for her office. That’s the part that surprised me: a project I started for myself ended up being something my family uses and loves every day.
My advice is to pick something that scares you a little - something you have no idea how to do. The pride won’t come from flawlessness. It’ll come from looking back at where you started and seeing how far you pushed yourself.
