I visited Château de Labourdonnais last year during a trip to Mauritius, and honestly, the colonial architecture is stunning, but what really stuck with me was the rum tasting in the old distillery. They make their own agricole rum from estate-grown sugarcane, and you can sample different vintages right there in the stone cellar. The guide explained how the process hasn't changed much since the 1800s, which gave the whole place a real sense of continuity.
One practical tip don't skip the orchard walk behind the château. Most people just tour the main house and move on, but the grounds are packed with tropical fruit trees, spices, and even a vanilla plantation. I grabbed a little map at the entrance and spent about an hour just wandering, smelling fresh nutmeg off the tree and watching the tortoises. The gift shop out front sells local jams and chutneys made from those fruits, which made for great souvenirs way better than standard tourist stuff.
If you're planning a visit, aim to go early in the morning around 9am to beat the heat and the bus tours. The light is softer for photos, and you'll have the place almost to yourself for the first hour. Also, they have a restaurant on site that does a nice lunch with local Creole dishes, but the portions are big, so share if you're not starving.
