I told myself it was just for two weeks.
My cousin found this scraggly mutt tied to a fence outside a gas station in Thika. She couldn't keep him because her landlord said "no dogs" and she was already hiding a cat. So I said, "Fine. Bring him over. I'll find a home."
That was four years ago.
He arrived smelling like old socks and determination. One ear up, one ear down. Crazy little man. The first night, he chewed my only pair of good sandals and then threw up on my duvet. I called my cousin fuming. She didn't pick up.
I named him Ndeng'a because he was always bouncing off walls like a drunk guy leaving a club in Eastlands. He doesn't bounce anymore. Now he sleeps on my pillow, takes up three quarters of my bed, and gives me side-eye if I come home late.
The worst part? He knows. He absolutely knows he was supposed to leave. Every time I tell someone the story, he hides his face like he's embarrassed of his origin story. But then he gets up, trots to the kitchen, and stares at the place where I keep his treats.
My friend still asks, "So when are you finding him a permanent home?"
I laugh every time. Ndeng'a just sighs. A full, theatrical sigh. Probably because he's thinking the same thing I am. Who exactly am I saving? Because this home was never supposed to be his. But somehow, it never felt like mine until he stayed.
