I have been to Xhumaga twice now, and the thing that really made it special for me was the way the village and the wildlife just blend together without any fences or barriers. One afternoon I was sitting outside a small thatched guesthouse, drinking tea, and a herd of zebras wandered right past the edge of the village path. The locals didn't even blink. They just kept walking, carrying water or chatting. That is the rhythm there. It is not a safari park experience. It is real life happening alongside animals.
The second time I went, I joined a local elder named Modise on a morning walk along the riverbank. He showed me how the BaSarwa people used to read animal tracks in the sand to know where the water was safe to drink. He pointed out fresh hippo prints leading down to the water and said we needed to give them space. That practical tip stuck with me. If you go, find someone local to walk with for an hour. They know the signs of when the wildlife is relaxed versus when it is stressed. It makes the whole experience feel safer and more connected.
Also, bring binoculars. The birdlife along the Boteti River is incredible. I saw African fish eagles and a pair of saddle-billed storks. The village itself is very small, so don't expect shops or restaurants. Bring your own food and water if you plan to stay overnight. It is peaceful in a way that humbles you.
