I have been through SSKIA probably a dozen times now, mostly connecting between Maun and Johannesburg or heading to Europe. One thing the other responses havent mentioned is how much the airport has improved in the last two or three years. The old terminal used to feel pretty cramped and tired, but the renovations they did around 2019 made a real difference. The check in area is much more open now, and there are actually enough seats in the departure lounge which used to be a real issue during peak hours.
Speaking of the departure lounge, the duty free shop is pretty small but they stock some decent local products. I always grab a few bags of the roasted mopane worms or some traditional tea blends for friends overseas. Theres also a little cafe that does surprisingly good samoosas and vetkoek, though the coffee is average at best. If you have a long layover, dont expect much in terms of lounges. There is one but its basic and not always open.
One practical tip: bring your own snacks if you are flying out early morning. The food options before security are almost nonexistent before 6am. Also, the wifi is free but can be spotty near the gates. I recommend downloading anything you need before you arrive. The staff though are generally friendly and efficient, which makes up for some of the infrastructure limitations.
Overall, it works fine as a gateway. Just dont expect a world class hub. It does the job, especially now that the road from town has been upgraded so the drive is only about 20 minutes without traffic.
