I got absolutely wrecked by not understanding how taxes work with freelance or side income. In my mid 20s I picked up a decent side gig doing graphic design for a small agency. Made about $8,000 extra that year. Felt like a genius buying nice stuff with that money. Then tax season hit and I owed almost $2,500 because no one was withholding for me. I had zero savings for it. Ended up on a payment plan with the IRS for two years.
That lesson changed everything. Now I always set aside 30% of any side income immediately into a separate account before I touch a penny. I treat it like it doesnt exist. Saves so much headache.
The other thing nobody warned me about was how much "lifestyle creep" sneaks up on you with raises. I got a $10,000 raise at 26 and suddenly was eating out more, buying nicer clothes, upgraded my apartment. Five years later I realized I was saving less than when I made less money. Its so easy to just match your spending to your income without noticing.
Wish someone had told me to put every single raise directly into automatic savings or investments for at least six months before adjusting my lifestyle. That would have built a real cushion and let me feel the raise later when it actually mattered.
