The first step in plotting a story is to kill it, or let it die—it depends on your point of view.
Then you look for it again and raise it up from the dead.

The second step to plotting a story is to wing it back and forth until it finds a perfect balance. When it suits you right, you give it a pat and begin to write.

The third step to plotting a story is to wing characters like puppets and make them do your biddings.
Let them dance and play, sprinkle a bit of tears, and add enough twist to your taste.

The last step to plotting a story is to run from your work and only come back to peep a few times. So you won't take the poor story on a whim and trash it in the bin.
