Hello Neighbors,
Our history is laced with the blood of men. People who have lived in times past, suffered affliction and even worse, they faced death. These men need not take their bath because the Atlantic was their road, stronger they waxed each day. Some held on to hope until they escaped or found freedom while others died while the light of hope never kissed the lenses of their eyes.
On today's tour across the African continent through the #DiscoverAfrica and #VisitAfrica writing experience, let's take a quick look at some punishments our ancestors faced during the prime of slave trade.
1. Whipping: Slaves often suffered gruesome lashes from their masters. Some where whipped to death while others to points where their skins tore and pepper was added to the open injuries.
2.Mutilation: To create a lasting impression, slave masters often severed body parts of slaves to induce fear, subjugation and dominance.
3.Branding: Sometimes slaves suffer scars and imprints induced by red hot metal models. These models often imprint brands and signatures as penalty for punishment or means of identification and ownership.
4.Demotion or sale: This punishment, though less painful phyiscally, entails removing previously promoted or decorated slaves and selling them off.
5.Long-term chaining: Slaves often suffer extensive punishment in the weirdest forms. Chaining an individual for long hours so that they don't run away.
6.Forced Reproduction: One of the hallmark of the slave trade was the sexual harassment accompanied with it. Some slave girls are forcibly taken as concubines to raise a household for their masters.
These gruesome, yet painful experiences were the ordeals that plagued our ancestors who lived during advent and exploitation of Africa by the French, Portuguese, British and other Colonial masters.
Today we salute their courage, hope, resillience, faith, strength and lives.
