HOPE FOR THE RESTORATION OF AFIKPO LIGHT
A meeting of Afikpo Electricity Committee with the Anthony Egwu-led Ministry of Power was held yesterday, 15th November 2024, at Ukpa Civic Center, Afikpo; as always, the committee aims to ensure that Afikpo's electricity is restored without glitches. Recall that former Commissioner for Power, Hon. Anthony Egwu under whose supervision the contract was executed, had his job rejected by the EEDC. The controversial contract of N208,000,000 meant for sundry repairs of the entire electricity architecture fell short of several yardsticks of standardization and was summarily condemned by the electricity body.
Following these revelations, Afikpo quickly set up a committee led by the President-General of Afikpo Town Welfare Association (ATWA), Hon. Okogwu to ensure that the correct specifications are installed before the lines are drawn. The committee in their inaugural meeting, had directed Mr. Anthony to as a matter of urgency, lead his team to revisit all transformer sites and change all sub-standard installations. The mandate came on the heels of so many agitations and accusations of gross misappropriation of funds by the public.
However, Okumkpo Radio gathered from today's meeting that all sub-standard installations have been replaced with the specified materials from the quotation, to the utmost satisfaction of the committee. The committee expressed its gratitude to the former Commissioner for his prompt response and encouraged him to remain steadfast with the view of restoring permanent electricity to the people of Afikpo.
The committee says it will convene a joint meeting with the officials of EEDC and Ebonyi State Ministry of Power, to ascertain the possibility of restoring power to Afikpo before Christmas. According to unconfirmed reports, alternative routing of lines from Enugu to Afikpo has arrived Uburu where it will undergo a series of diversion routines, from where it will be routed to Okposi, before arriving Afikpo. Whether this will be actualized before Christmas is as uncertain as it is unlikely.
The main and permanent solution, which is the energizing of Amasiri Sub-station from the Station at Mile-50 Abakaliki, has continued to breathe on the shoulders of the Governor of Ebonyi State, HE, Rt. Hon. Bldr. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, who graciously promised to bear all cost-related expenses required to restore light to Afikpo even as he asked all Social Media gladiators involved in the infamous restoration of Afikpo light agitations to sheath their swords, with a striking December 2024 deadline.#neighbors
