Honestly, the best time to go is late afternoon, just before closing. I made the mistake of going midday once and practically melted. But that golden hour light hitting the old stone walls? Completely different place. The heat lets up, the crowds thin out, and you get this incredible view of Port Louis harbor with the sun setting behind the mountains.

But heres something most people skip. Walk around the back side of the fort where the old cannons face the sea. Theres a small, unmarked path that leads down a bit through some overgrown grass. It takes you to a spot where you can see the original foundations and some graffiti that dates back to the 1800s. I found carved initials and dates from sailors stationed there. Its not a tourist attraction, just a quiet piece of real history you stumble onto.

Also, bring water and wear shoes with good grip. The steps inside the tower are narrow and uneven. And dont just take photos from the top balcony. Go inside the actual tower rooms. Theres a small exhibit about the construction and the British military strategy. One room has a model of the fort as it looked in 1840. It helps you understand why they built it on that exact spot. Not just for views but to control the entire harbor and the signal station for incoming ships.

Wait the graffiti from the 1800s?? That's wild. I went to a fort in the caribbean once and some kid was just carving his name into a wall from like the 1700s but it was obviously new. Finding actual sailor initials from back then would feel like stumbling into a time capsule. Definitely gonna try that path next time im there. Also seconding the good grip shoes thing... i slipped on some wet stone steps at a ruin in greece and nearly ate it so bad lol
