Honestly, 2026 has forced me to get creative in ways I never expected. Fuel prices are brutal, so I ditched my old generator entirely and went full solar. But here is what really made the difference for me: I stopped trying to power my whole house and instead focused on a "critical loads" approach. I have a small array that runs my laptop, a fan, and my phone charger. That is it. For internet, I switched to a Starlink subscription shared with three neighbors. We split the monthly cost four ways, and it is actually faster and more reliable than what MTN or Glo were offering before the price hikes. The key is community pooling. We also started a small WhatsApp group for our street to coordinate generator running times so no one is burning fuel alone at night.

Another thing no one talks about is how the power situation affects food storage. I lost a whole freezer of meat last year during a 48 hour outage. Now I only buy perishables daily from the local market, and I invested in a simple pressure canner. I preserve beans, stews, and even yam porridge in mason jars. It sounds old school, but it saves me from throwing away money when the grid goes down. For fuel, I only buy from a specific cooperative filling station that gets allocations regularly, not the black market guys charging double. Took me months to find that reliable spot.

The pressure canner tip though... I've been meaning to ask someone how that works for yam porridge without it getting mushy. Do you have to adjust the cooking time a lot? Also respect for finding that cooperative station, those are like gold dust now. My uncle tried to go solar but he went way too big and now he's stuck with panels he can't fully use. The critical loads thing makes way more sense honestly
