In 1889, the Spiritans (Holy Ghost Fathers) embarked on their mission in Kenya, establishing their first Catholic mission at Ndera along the Tana River. This marked the beginning of their enduring presence in the country .

Expansion and Growth

By 1891, the Spiritans expanded their mission to Mombasa, under the leadership of Father Alexander le Roy. Recognizing the need for a more permanent structure, they acquired land in Makadara, Mombasa, and completed the Holy Ghost Cathedral in 1923, which remains a central place of Catholic worship in the city today .

Educational Contributions

The Spiritans played a pivotal role in education, founding institutions like Kabaa High School in Machakos County. Their commitment to education extended to various regions, including Ukambani, Murang’a, and Kiambu, where they established schools and vocational centers .

Community Engagement

Beyond education, the Spiritans engaged in community development, focusing on healthcare, social justice, and empowerment initiatives. Their work in Nairobi's slums and other underserved areas reflects their dedication to serving marginalized communities .

Modern-Day Presence

Today, the Spiritans continue their mission across Kenya, operating in five dioceses and remaining active in education, social services, and pastoral care. Their legacy endures through the institutions they've established and the communities they've served .
