Heroes We Stand!

The wails came at the early hours,
After a fine meal of eba and okro soup,
We'd laid down for the night,
With hopes to begin our daily grind
On the morrow, had we known better,
That tomorrow's dawn would be stained,
Scarlet with our unwritten heroes and braves,
Who stood for rights and waved the flag,
With blind faith in leaders whose agenda,
Danced around aims and objectives unknown,
Who dashed the dream of youth and stomped on truth,
Our heroes sang a different tune, lived as champions,
Forbiddding to be bought or used by the feeders of stipends,
Forbidding to accept the status quo, challenging the norms,
Slept in harsh climate, welcomed by the elements,
The ground wept in bitterness when fed guiltless blood,
As in Abel's day, aghast at the evil of man's heart,
Unchanged, unwavering, still in force,
Our heroes, who bled, who lived,
Our heroes, gone but never forgotten,
October, your twentieth day will hold for us a new meaning, forever.
