📍LAGOS State, Nigeria

DAY 20 - GBEREFU ISLAND OF BADAGRY, LAGOS
Point of No Return, is the metaphorical nomenclature used to refer to GBEREFU ISLAND in Badagry, Nigeria. This historic Island was a major slave port during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade era. As described in its name, this point was where a slave begins his sojourn to strange lands and has no hope of returning to his homeland.

In 1473, Gberefu Island was opened. It was a point of no return for slaves, who were shipped to unknown destinations. According to Nigerian historians, about 3 million slaves were shipped from the island to the Americas and Caribbean between 1518 and 1880.

Close to the Atlantic Ocean at BADAGRY, this iconic island is symbolized by two poles that are slightly slanted towards each other facing the ocean. You can access Gberefu Island by road or boat.

Filled with historical items and memories, tourists should prepare themselves to be overwhelmed by the stories surrounding the exportations of slaves from this port to faraway lands of no return.
