His Excellency the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon. (Dr.) Mai Mala Buni FCIA, CON, COMN, has launched the 2025 tree planting campaign and vowed to restore deforested land and forests across Yobe State.
The governor launched the tree planting campaign at Mai Mala Buni Housing Estate, along the Gujba-Damaturu road, today, the 26th of August, 2025, where he also issued a stern warning and vowed to take action against those who illegally cut down trees without planting others.
The governor is taking steps to implement his Forest Restoration Plan, namely “The Buni Forest and Degraded Lands Restoration Plan,” in his government’s efforts to reduce desertification, restore its dignity, and mitigate the effects of climate change.
The government has been taking major steps since 2020 to prevent soil erosion in the Sahara Desert by planting millions of different types of trees in parts of Yobe State to protect the Sahara Desert.
The government has also taken major steps, including a partnership to create 100 hectares of Gum Arabic plantations in each senatorial district, establishing six weather stations, distributing modern oil-burning stoves and gas ovens, and planting trees in partnership with the World Bank, the Central Bank of Africa, and the Great Green Wall Program.
In a new move today, Governor Buni directed the Yobe State Standing Committee on Climate Change to establish annual awards and prizes for communities, schools, and individuals who plant and maintain the most trees across Yobe State.
He also called on traditional rulers and security agencies to take steps to strengthen cooperation to fully control illegal felling of trees in their areas and warned of providing effective punishment for violators and taking legal action.
“Cutting trees without providing replacements is a threat that is putting us at risk of climate change, which is threatening the sustainability of our deserts, flooding, and loss of soil quality. We must take steps to plant trees and protect those we plant.” The governor said,
The Governor expressed confidence that the restoration of forests and degraded lands can be achieved through joint efforts across Yobe State.
