In another reflection of Gov. Mai Mala Buni’s open and people-centered governance, the Yobe State House of Assembly has taken decisive steps to address the growing number of road accidents along the Damaturu–Potiskum highway, particularly within the communities of Ngelzarma, Damagum, and Dogon Kuka.
The motion of urgent public importance was sponsored by Hon. Maina Digma Gana, a member representing Damagum Constituency, during Tuesday’s plenary session. He decried the alarming rate of accidents that have claimed many lives, describing it as “a recurring tragedy that continues to rob families of their loved ones and livelihoods.”
Hon. Gana revealed that since the beginning of 2025, over 30 people have died in separate crashes within the Damagum axis alone; he therefore urged the government to construct a roundabout in Damagum and install road barriers (booms) in Ngelzarma and Dogon Kuka to minimize overspeeding and reckless driving.
Supporting the motion, Majority Leader Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf and Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo called on the Yobe Road Traffic Agency (YOROTA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to intensify road safety campaigns and community sensitization on the dangers of speed and negligence.
Presiding over the session, Speaker Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio commended the lawmakers for their concern for citizens’ welfare and directed that the matter be forwarded to Yobe’s representatives at the National Assembly for possible federal collaboration and intervention.
The swift response of the Assembly underscores the Buni administration’s open-door policy and its unwavering commitment to responsive, people-driven governance—where every concern raised by citizens finds its way into policy discussion and action.
For many residents, the move is a sign of a government that truly listens. “We’ve lost too many people on this road,” said Abubakar Musa, a commercial driver from Ngelzarma. “It gives us hope to see our leaders taking this seriously.”
Under Governor Mai Mala Buni, Yobe continues to set the pace in inclusive governance and proactive leadership—where safety, development, and compassion remain at the heart of public service.
