In a major step toward economic empowerment and environmental protection, Governor Mai Mala Buni has delivered a modern water diversion and flood control facility in Alagarno, providing a lasting solution to irrigation challenges, fishing needs, and recurring flood risks.
The project features a manually adjustable control gate that enables effective management of river flow; with this system, water can be directed to support dry-season farming, channeled toward fishing areas to enhance productivity, or controlled to prevent flooding in surrounding communities.
For farmers, the project opens a new chapter of opportunity. Access to steady water supply during the dry season means expanded farmland, increased harvests, and more reliable income. It also reduces dependence on rainfall and allows for continuous agricultural activities throughout the year.
Local fishermen are also expected to benefit, as the regulated water system creates a more conducive environment for fish growth and sustainability, ultimately improving catch volumes and strengthening livelihoods.
The flood control aspect of the project provides critical protection for homes, farmlands, and infrastructure, addressing a long-standing challenge that has caused losses in the past. With better water management, communities can now live and work with greater security.
Economically, the impact is far-reaching. Increased agricultural and fishing output will drive local trade, create employment opportunities, and enhance food availability across the region.
The project also supports small businesses linked to farming and fishing, contributing to a stronger rural economy.
This intervention highlights Gov. Buni’s continued commitment to delivering practical, high-impact projects that improve livelihoods, promote sustainability, and accelerate economic growth in Bade LGA and across Yobe State.
