




Gov. Buni stresses strengthening border infrastructure and curbing illicit arms trade to ensure peace and security in Lake Chad Basin

The Executive Governor of Yobe State, His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni FCIA, CON, COMN, and Chairman of the Lake Chad Governors Forum (LCBGF), chaired the Lake Chad Basin Governors Forum (LCBGF) Council Meeting at the forum’s headquarters in Ndjamena, Chad, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Forum.
The governor was elected as the chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors Forum (LCBGF) a month ago during a 5th LCBGF meeting in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. The meeting focused on security and economic issues to restore peace and security in the region under the joint leadership of the governors of the Lake Chad Basin.
Since assuming the helm of the LCBGF, this is the first time that the governor has chaired the inaugural meeting at the forum’s headquarters as the chairman of the forum.
During the meeting, Governor Buni highlighted the importance of reviewing the work done between the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum and the Lake Chad Authority.
“It was special for me, as this was my first time since assuming the chairmanship of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, where it was my responsibility to encourage the creation of peace, stability, and prosperity in our region to chaired this meeting.” He said
The governor also highlighted the outcome of the fifth forum held in Maiduguri, recalling that it was built on the pillars of security, cooperation, humanitarian assistance, sustainable development, and climate resilience, which he said would reinforce the region’s resolve to move from declaration to delivery.
Among the priorities of the governor are enhancing the work of the International Joint Task Force, deepening the provision of infrastructure along the country's borders, raising funds through the Special Public Relations Fund the Nexus Funding Facility, and supporting the reintegration and reconciliation policies.
During the discussion at the forum, he also focused on how to address emerging threats in the region, with the governor saying;
"We remain committed to addressing emerging threats such as youth extremism, illicit arms trade, and environmental degradation, and we welcome the development of regional strategies to ensure resilience and the launch of transformative projects such as the Lake Chad Basin Ecosystem and Economic Recovery Support Programme.
"We also have the responsibility to enhance climate resilience, restore the environment, and build sustainable peace in the Lake Chad Basin and to enhance the early warning system, which the Lake Chad Basin Commission will establish at this time. Despite the difficult situation, it is imperative that we strengthen our diplomacy and provide appropriate advices." He also stressed
The governor also commended the Federal Government of Nigeria for its efforts to achieve the goals of the organization and reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Lake Chad Basin Commission and Lake Chad.
