{Response to Sahara Reporter’s Erroneous Report (Soki Burutsu) on the ASUU Strike at Yobe State University}.
On July 26, 2025, Sahara Reporters published an article full of errors that exposed the Yobe State government’s failure to prioritize education and its benefits for the people of the state, claiming that the state government had favored the governor’s media aide by hosting a 300 millionseminar/workshop in Kaduna State.
The article titled “Yobe Governor Buni Ignores University Union ASUU Strike On Minimum Wage, Splashes NN300 MillionOn Influencers' WWorkshop” hascaptured the attention of people on social media, drawing controversy and strong reactions.
The first thing we should consider is that the Yobe State government under the leadership of His Excellency the Governor Hon. (Dr.) Mai Mala Buni FCIA, CON, COMN, has played a significant role in providing education based on the priority he has set since his first term as governor after the imposition of a state of emergency in the education sector and the creation of a mechanism to curb the increase in school fees to provide the people of the state with full access to education as fully independent citizens.
The real reason why the Yobe State Teachers Union (YSU-ASUU) went on strike is not over the new minimum wage, because the Yobe State Government introduced and started paying the minimum wage in December 2024, and Yobe State wworkers, including academic staff and civil sservants, are continuing to benefit from this new minimum wage despite the economic pressures facing the Northern states,. GovernorBuni has played a key role by implementing it.
The Yobe State University Teachers Union (ASUU) has threatened to go on strike over the delay in the payment of some of their allowances on July 11 and the issue of postgraduate scholarships, which the Yobe State Government has already sat down to discuss and resolve by signing an agreement to pay them the minimum wage and the remaining 25% of the allowances as promised to them.
Sahara Reporters also published a story highlighting the state government’s failure in the field of universal education after the launch of the Yobe State Capital Development and Modernization Plan, while Governor Buni is currently constructing a historic Fflyoverand Uunderpass, which will cost over N22 billion.
Sahara Reporters published all this after forgetting that Yobe State under Governor Buni has built anewmodern primary and secondary schools that can be compared in terms of infrastructure and teaching facilities to those of other sstates'suniversities ointhis country.
Then they ignored his interests in ensuring the quality of the state’s universities by changing the structure and policies that play a vital role in improving the education of the people of the state, converting CABS Potiskum to CAMTECH, establishing major health research centers at Yobe State University , and providingmodern laboratory equipment to enhance medical education in the university and colleges.
Along with this, the governor has also built large modern classrooms and hostels, built good mega and model sschools, and provided adequate electricity to the schools by providing high-power and modern electricity ttransformersalong with providing safe and sufficient water and other necessary measures to modernize education.
The photos attached below show how secondary and junior secondary schools are benefiting from the progress made under the leadership of His Excellency the Executive Governor Hon. (Dr.) Mai Mala Buni FCIA, CON, COMN.
The Yobe State Government under the leadership of His Excellency the Governor is always open to listening and addressing any issue that needs to be addressed.
There is nothing but errors in the information contained in the article published by Sahara Reporters.
