Gov. Mai Mala Buni has recorded another major milestone in his economic transformation agenda with the successful delivery of ultra-modern markets in Potiskum and Ngalda, two critical commercial hubs in Southern Yobe (Zone B).

Potiskum Local Government Area is widely acknowledged as the commercial nerve center of Yobe State, with far-reaching influence in transportation, trade, and industrial activities. The town serves as a major commercial gateway for all 178 wards of the state and continues to attract traders from neighboring states such as Bauchi, Borno, and parts of Jigawa, reinforcing its status as a regional trading powerhouse.

Home to Africa’s largest cattle market and one of Nigeria’s most vibrant grain markets, Potiskum plays a central role in linking Northern and Southern Nigeria through commerce. This strategic position has consistently created vast opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and economic self-reliance, especially for youths and women across the country.

To further strengthen this role, the Buni administration has completed a state-of-the-art market in Potiskum, featuring modern facilities, well-organized stalls, improved security architecture, and a structured management system. The market is designed to modernize trading activities, enhance safety, and create a more efficient and competitive business environment for traders.

Similarly, Ngalda—an ancient town with a long-standing tradition of commerce in the Fika Local Government Area—hosts one of the most influential weekly markets in Northeast Nigeria, held every Monday. Its strategic location along the Yobe–Gombe corridor has made it a major commercial link, attracting traders from Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, and other parts of the region.

In line with this commercial importance, Gov. Buni has also completed an ultra-modern market in Ngalda. Equipped with improved infrastructure, organized trading spaces, and enhanced security measures, the facility is expected to restore confidence among traders and visitors, increase patronage, and deepen cross-border commercial activities.

The completion of the twin markets underscores Gov. Mai Mala Buni’s commitment to inclusive economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development through targeted investments in commercial infrastructure, firmly positioning Yobe State as a rising hub of trade and enterprise in the Northeast.
