Paul Mescal as Lucius carrying the weight of a legacy that was never supposed to be his - that alone should have been enough. But then Denzel Washington walks into this film as Macrinus and rewrites every scene he is in.

Denzel did not play a villain. He played a man who understood power better than everyone around him and used that understanding like a surgeon uses a scalpel. Every smile was a calculation. Every kindness was a trap door.

The Colosseum sequences were sensory overload in the best way. Ridley Scott at 86 directing action with more urgency than directors half his age. The baboon scene alone earned its entire budget.

My only grievance: the film knew it could never be the original and sometimes tried too hard to remind you of that fact. But Paul Mescal made Lucius his own. And Denzel made the entire film his.

Rating: 8.5/10. Watch it loud.
