Nestled in the bustling Kicukiro District, Gikondo Recreation Grounds is transforming from an industrial zone into one of Kigali’s most anticipated urban parks. This expansive space is part of an ambitious wetland restoration project aimed at rejuvenating Kigali’s environment while offering residents a refreshing spot for leisure and culture.

The wetland covers about 162 hectares and plays a vital role in controlling floods, supporting biodiversity, and cleaning city waters. Thanks to Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), this area is being converted into a multifunctional park that includes sports courts for football, basketball, and volleyball, playgrounds for children, outdoor gyms, and scenic walking and cycling trails. Visitors can also look forward to an amphitheater for cultural events, observation decks to appreciate the natural surroundings, and kiosks offering local food and crafts.

Located just 6 km from Kigali’s city center, it’s easily reachable by taxi, bus, or private car. Early mornings and late afternoons are ideal for visits, with pleasant temperatures and vibrant wildlife activity. Whether you’re into jogging, photography, or simply relaxing with a picnic, Gikondo is gearing up to become a favorite community spot.

As the project progresses, Gikondo Recreation Grounds exemplifies Rwanda’s commitment to sustainable urban development, blending environmental care with social and cultural life in the heart of Kigali.

That sounds like a fantastic addition to Kigali! Can't wait to check it out when I visit. Maybe they'll have some cultural events happening soon that I can attend.
