Nestled in the Gahanga sector on the outskirts of Kigali, the Gahanga Cricket Stadium stands as Rwanda’s first international-standard cricket ground and a beacon of sustainable design and community empowerment.
🏗️ Architectural Innovation Rooted in Local Materials
Designed by Light Earth Designs, the stadium's pavilion features three parabolic vaults that mimic the trajectory of a bouncing cricket ball and reflect Rwanda’s rolling hills. Constructed using 66,000 compressed soil-cement tiles made on-site from local earth, the structure showcases sustainable building practices. These tiles were produced and assembled by local laborers, many recruited through Rwanda’s Vision Umurenge Program, aimed at uplifting the country's most vulnerable populations .
🏏 A Hub for Cricket and Community Engagement
Beyond hosting international cricket matches, Gahanga Cricket Stadium serves as the home base for Cricket Builds Hope (CBH), a charity leveraging cricket for social development. CBH organizes:
Youth coaching sessions for local schools
Adolescent sexual and reproductive health programs, educating children aged 11–15 on topics like sexuality, rights, and health
Free HIV testing in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre
Kids’ summer camps focusing on life skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving
The stadium has also hosted various international tournaments, including ICC-sanctioned events, and has welcomed cricket legends like Michael Vaughan and Sam Billings.
🌿 Sustainable Design and Community Integration
The stadium's design emphasizes sustainability and community involvement:
Use of local materials: Bricks and tiles made from local soil and agro-waste-fired clay reduce environmental impact.
Rainwater harvesting: The design incorporates systems to collect and utilize rainwater effectively.
Natural ventilation and lighting: Open mezzanines and perforated brickwork allow for airflow and natural light, reducing energy consumption.
Community spaces: The pavilion includes a bar, restaurant, and clubhouse, serving as social hubs for both cricket enthusiasts and local residents .
📍Visiting Gahanga Cricket Stadium
Visitors to the stadium can enjoy panoramic views of the cricket oval and surrounding wetland valley from the open mezzanines. The natural amphitheater created by the site's topography offers a unique spectator experience. Whether attending a match, participating in community programs, or exploring sustainable architecture, Gahanga Cricket Stadium provides a multifaceted experience that celebrates sport, culture, and innovation.
