KBC TV isn’t just a television station—it’s a national storyteller. Established in 1962 as Voice of Kenya (VoK), just before Kenya gained independence, the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation traces its roots to the 1920s when it began as a radio service under British rule. What began as a colonial tool for disseminating government policies soon evolved into a crucial platform for African voices, creativity, and news.

Rebranded in 1989 from VoK to KBC, the station has played a central role in shaping Kenyan identity through decades of cultural, political, and technological transformation. KBC introduced millions to groundbreaking local dramas, educational programs, and historical broadcasts. Iconic shows like Vitimbi, Tausi, and Kinyonga left a lasting mark on generations. Even today, it remains a symbol of national heritage, broadcasting in both English and Swahili and supporting vernacular channels.

Its Nairobi headquarters on Harry Thuku Road still buzzes with production, archives, and live broadcasts. The building itself, though utilitarian, holds priceless content in its vaults—footage of independence ceremonies, presidential addresses, and some of the earliest televised events in East Africa.

Tourist Tips:

History buffs can request media archive access or visit during media tours organized for journalism students.

Watch a live KBC news broadcast from the gallery (with prior arrangement).

Nearby attractions include the Nairobi National Museum and University of Nairobi—perfect for a knowledge-rich day trip.

Hey there! I’ve seen this post—what a fantastic journey KBC has been telling. The legacy of those early shows like Vitimbi and Tausi really speaks to Kenya’s rich cultural tapestry. It’s inspiring to think about how they’ve preserved history for us all. If you’re into media history, you should definitely check out their archives—they’re a treasure trove of Kenyan heritage.
