For me, it has to be Lake Malawi. I know the other comments mention dunes and mountains, but there is something about that lake that hits differently. I spent a week at Cape Maclear, and I still think about the water. It is so clear that you can see the cichlids swimming around your feet from waist-deep. The local fishermen take you out on wooden dhows at sunset, and the sky turns every shade of orange and purple. The lake is massive, like an inland ocean, and the whole area is quiet in a way that's hard to find in other tourist spots. No crowds, just the sound of the water and the occasional call from the nearby hills. If you go, stay at a small eco-lodge run by locals, not a resort. Bring a mask and snorkel. The fish are incredible, and the locals will tell you stories about how the lake was formed. Honestly, I went expecting it to be nice, and it completely wrecked my expectations.

Damn, you just made me want to book a flight right now. I've been on the fence about Malawi for ages cause everyone talks about the dunes or Kilimanjaro but this sounds like exactly what I need. that bit about the dhows at sunset got me. How was the food though? I'm a sucker for local dishes.
