Opened in 1989 and extensively renovated ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, FNB Stadium's design is inspired by the African calabash, or gourd, reflecting the continent's rich heritage . The stadium's exterior features a stunning façade made of 36,000 gold and red lights, creating a striking visual display during events . It has hosted numerous historic events, including the 2010 World Cup final and Nelson Mandela's first speech in Johannesburg after his release from prison .

FNB Stadium regularly hosts full-house domestic and international football matches, including the Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. It has also been a preferred venue for international rugby test matches and major concerts by global superstars such as U2, Lady Gaga, and Justin Bieber .
