Faith is the reason I pause before I speak or act, especially when I'm frustrated or rushed. I've learned that my gut reaction is rarely my best one, so I use a simple practice I picked up from a pastor years ago. Before sending a tough email, making a purchase over a certain amount, or even choosing how to spend a free evening, I ask myself one question: "Does this build up or tear down?" That's it. It's not a prayer session or a long meditation. It’s a split-second check against the core of what I believe.

This has saved me from countless stupid arguments and impulse buys. For example, a guy at work took credit for something I did. My first instinct was to fire back an email to our boss proving him wrong. But that question stopped me. Instead, I walked over to his desk and asked if we could clarify the project notes together. Turns out it was a total misunderstanding. We ended up with a better system for tracking our work, and he actually respects me more now. Faith made me choose relationship over being right in that moment.

The biggest change has been in how I handle money. I used to see my paycheck as my reward to spend however I wanted. Now, I see it more as something I'm a manager of, not just an owner. That shift means I budget for giving first, before bills or fun money. It sounds restrictive but it's oddly freeing. It cuts down the anxiety about "not having enough" because I've already declared that part of it isn't mine to hoard.

Faith isn't a rulebook I carry around. It's more like a compass that quietly nudges my shoulder when I'm about to walk off a cliff.

Wow, that desk conversation part really hit home. I've done the same thing where I almost sent the angry email but stopped myself and just went to talk to the person instead. It's so much harder in the moment but every single time it's saved me from looking like a jerk lol. That 'build up or tear down' question is simple but I bet it works way better than overthinking everything like I tend to do. Might have to steal that one.
