DAY 8 - LEBOKU FESTIVAL, CROSSRIVER STATE
📍Cross River State, Nigeria
Does this festival sound unfamiliar to you? That's because you probably haven't heard of the Yakurr people from Cross River State. The Yakurr refers to five indigenous villages - The Ugep, Ekomi, Isori, Nko and Mkpani.
The Leboku is an annual celebration of the New Yam celebrated by the Ugep people. It is an opportunity for them to thank their gods for the a new harvest and honour the ancestral spirits of the land.
The colourful 3-weeks event usually features parading of yams, beauty Contest, poetry contest, wrestling and other festivities.
Contrary to the opinion that Yakurr is home for cannibalism, the Leboku festival showcases one of the beauties of the Yakurr people.
Watching their beautiful maidens adorned with the Liman (Leg bangles) and half nude traditional attires, you can surely say there is more to the Yakurr people than the beer parlour tales of cannibalism.
