Agodi Gardens, also known as Agodi Botanical Gardens, is a serene and historic recreational park located in the heart of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, at the foot of Mokola Hill along Parliament Road. Spanning approximately 150 acres, it serves as a green oasis amidst the bustling city, offering a tranquil escape for locals and tourists alike. Established in 1967 under the management of the Western Region, the gardens were originally named Agodi Zoological and Botanical Gardens and were envisioned as a top-tier recreational center. However, the infamous Ogunpa flood of 1980 devastated the park, sweeping away many animals and leaving it in ruins. In 2012, the Oyo State Government undertook a significant renovation, and the revitalized Agodi Gardens was reopened in 2014, cementing its status as a key tourist attraction in Nigeria.

The gardens are renowned for their diverse attractions, making them a family-friendly destination. Visitors can enjoy a water park featuring two slides and three pools catering to both adults and children, a mini zoo housing animals such as lions, crocodiles, monkeys, and ducks, and a scenic lake offering boat rides with picturesque views. The park also includes children’s play areas with swings, trampolines, and bouncy castles, as well as designated picnic spots perfect for relaxation and social gatherings. Additional amenities include a restaurant, refreshment shops, and a paintball arena, enhancing the recreational experience. The lush greenery, manicured lawns, and well-maintained pathways provide an ideal setting for leisurely strolls, pre-wedding photo shoots, garden parties, and outdoor events like concerts and weddings.

Agodi Gardens is not just a recreational space but also a hub for biodiversity and education. It plays a vital role in conserving local flora and fauna, serving as a sanctuary for diverse plant and animal species. The park offers educational programs and guided tours, enlightening visitors about environmental conservation and the importance of biodiversity. Its strategic location, about ten minutes from the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, makes it easily accessible, with an entrance fee of 500 Naira per person and an additional 500 Naira for swimming pool access. While external drinks are prohibited, visitors can bring food and enjoy local delicacies like palm wine, pepper soup, and asun from on-site vendors.

Despite its appeal, Agodi Gardens faces challenges, including occasional management issues and excessive charges, as noted by some reviews. However, its lush landscapes, affordable entry, and variety of activities continue to draw crowds seeking relaxation and adventure. With plans to expand into a massive resort featuring hotel chalets, spas, and a canopy walkway, Agodi Gardens aims to elevate its status to an international standard. As a vital recreational and ecological asset, it bridges urban and rural communities, offering a space for rejuvenation, cultural events, and environmental appreciation in the heart of Ibadan.
