Emilia Perez is the most original film I have seen in years and I am still not entirely sure what to do with it.

Jacques Audiard made a Spanish-language Mexican musical about a cartel boss who fakes her death to transition and start over. That sentence should not work as a film. It absolutely works as a film.

Zoe Saldana as Rita Mora Castro is the moral center. A lawyer dragged into something she cannot control, watching it spiral with her hand on the wheel.

Selena Gomez as Jessi Del Monte surprised everyone including the people who underestimated her going in.

Karla Sofia Gascon as Emilia made history as the first trans actress nominated for Best Actress at Cannes, where this film won Best Ensemble.

The musical sequences are not ornament. They are the film's nervous system. When Audiard lets characters sing their confessions it does not feel like Broadway. It feels like prayer.

Rating: 9/10. Audacious, imperfect, unforgettable.
