A radiant 83-year-old woman, always impeccably dressed by 8 am, with her hair styled and makeup flawlessly applied, is transitioning to a retirement facility following the recent passing of her husband, which prompted her decision.
After patiently waiting in the hallway of the home for hours, her face lights up with a sweet smile upon hearing that her room is ready. As she maneuvers her walker towards the elevator, she listens intently to the detailed description of her modest room, including the window curtains.
"I adore it," she exclaims with the enthusiasm of a young girl receiving a new pet for the first time.
"But Mrs. Jones, you haven't even seen the room yet. Please, just wait," urges the attendant.
"That's inconsequential," she replies calmly. "Happiness is a choice cultivated over time. Whether I like my room or not isn't dependent on furniture arrangement; it's contingent on how I shape my mindset. I've already made up my mind to cherish it. It's a decision I reaffirm each morning upon awakening. I possess the power to spend the day lamenting over my bodily limitations or to express gratitude for the functions I still retain. Every dawn is a gift, and for as long as I am granted sight, I will embrace each new day with joy and the fond memories I've amassed throughout my life.
Happiness resembles a bank account: what you withdraw is equivalent to what you deposit. Therefore, my counsel is to stockpile happiness in your memory bank. Remember these five simple principles:
1. Let go of hatred and discord in your heart.
2. Liberate your mind from worry.
3. Embrace simplicity in living.
4. Give generously.
5. Take only what you truly need.
These are the keys to a fulfilled life."
