Hello #neighbors

We've been touring around the African continent for the past 25 days and we've encountered different African cuisines, major landmarks, historical centres, ancient cities, and tourist centres.

In our journey so far, one significant difference that the tourist locations we'll be exploring makes it stand out is simply for the fact that these tourist are eco-friendly.

What is Eco-friendly Tourism?

Eco-friendly lodges are tourist centres built to be sustainable either by using recycled materials for the building itself, or by incorporating 'Green' elements into the lodge such as solar powered water heaters, grey water utilisation watering systems for gardens, recycle bins within all the areas of the lodge and the use of energy efficient light bulbs.

In recent times, several concerns have raosed regarding global warming and the melting of the ice in the artic and polar regions, hence the need to preserve the environment by reducing carbon footprint.

In the African continent, countries like Rwanda and Botswana have individually. implemented a code of conduct by ensuring environmentally friendly practices are used by companies operating within its regions.

This code of conduct is thoroughly supervised by government officials who regularly undertake inspection visits to lodges and safari companies to ensure eco-friendly practices are strictly adhered to and incorporated into their company policies.

Economic Benefits of Eco-friendly Tourism

These eco-friendly lodges often employ the locals of the community as a dual startegy of both providing income and increasing their skills. By this, they hope that the local employees will educate their children on eco-friendly practices.

Additionally, eco-friendly initiatives often consume local produce. They do this by either grow their edible produce themselves or purchase it from directly nearby local farmers.

Why Consume Local Produce?
This strategy by eco-friendly initiatives instituted by the aforementioned countries supports the local communities as well it helps curtail carbon footprint in the regions because there is less distance to transport the goods and less petrol or diesel consumed.

These eco-friendly initiatives, especially the lodges, beyond just consuming local produce have stretched further to incorporate the use of use of locally crafted soaps, blankets and handmade products in their rooms.

Most of these eco-friendly lodge often provide metrics, statistics and percentages relating to how much they have reduced their kitchen waste, water waste and other consumables, usually on inspection by government officials. Government officials stretched further to make these practices are included and clearly stated before the establishment of any newly built safari lodge.
