chapter 4: The informant.
I sprang to my feet then, going into action with ineffable speed. I reached for the knife, put on my amulet, and jumped outside, very ready to unleash terror on anyone who could be after my best friend, Njoku.
But Njoku was the only one outside when I scanned the area. His eyes were frantic and his face still held shock.
"Njoku", I said slowly, "what is the matter? Did you meet with your stepfather's ghost?"
Njoku's stepfather was Nkunku. He was built like a bull and sent terror down the spines of anyone he came across. People feared to cross him in the whole village. Njoku was usually unlucky to be caught doing some adventurous things that Nkunku did not like and Nkunku made sure to show him, in the worst possible way, that he did not like nonsense, putting my friend through a traumatic experience for many years.
Sometimes, I wondered what Njoku's mother saw in the brute of a man who was even banned by the village wrestling committee because he broke Amalinze, "the cat's" waist, effectively paralyzing him for life, just by simply grabbing him with those evil hands! Tufiakwa!!
He died many years ago in a hunting expedition where we heard he was torn apart by hyenas.
"No, this is not about me!" Njoku said.
I stood speechless and watched my friend.
"So, you ran here this night, waking me up from bed because you felt there was a sweet gist that couldn't wait till tomorrow?!" I asked completely perplexed.
Njoku sighed.
"Listen, they've taken Mbana..."
