DJENNE; THE MARKET CENTER - DAY 16
Dear Readership, we toured Timbuktu, Mali yesterday and saw how it was important as one of the world's heritage.
Today, we will be going to another city in Mali.. the city of DJENNE and we will be looking at it as a very big trading centre in Africa during medieval times.
DJENNE has been inhabited since 250 B.C, became a market center and an important link in the transaharan Gold trade. In the 15th and 16 centuries, it became one of the centers for the propagation of Islam.
DJENNE is an ancient trading city and center of Muslim scholarship, southern Mali. It is situated on the Bani River and on flood lands between the Bani and Niger rivers, 220 miles southwest of Timbuktu. The city, sits on hillocks (small hills) known as toguere, becomes an island during the area’s seasonal flooding.
The history of Djenné is closely linked with that of Timbuktu. Between the 15th and 17th centuries much of the trans-Saharan trade in goods such as salt, gold, and slaves that moved in and out of Timbuktu passed through Djenne. Both towns became centres of Islamic scholarship. Djenne's prosperity depended on this trade and when the Portuguese established trading posts on the African coast, the importance of the trans-Saharan trade and thus of Djenne declined.
The town is famous for its distinctive adobe architecture, most notably the Great Mosque which was built in 1907 on the site of an earlier mosque. To the south of the town is Djenne-Djenno, the site of one of the oldest known towns in sub-Saharan Africa. Djenne together with Djenne-Djenno were designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
Well, till we get to the promised land, I shall be waiting for when you'll pass me a glass of water and thank God for the gift of grace for the race.
