Soteria, has always been the sweetest child. Caring and loving, she was adored by almost everyone she met, not just for her personality but also for her cute face and growing hair. People called her special, reflecting the joy we felt after her birth, which is why we named her "Soteria" after the best thing ever given to us—Salvation. She was a miracle baby considering the challenges we faced with two lost children and a miscarriage before her arrival.
As typical Nigerian parents, we reside in a two-bedroom apartment in Abule Egba, Lagos. We moved here after the miscarriage. I manage a shop at Oja Oba market, selling foodstuffs, while my husband works as a project manager in a book company. We lead a comfortable life, able to fulfill our needs and most of our wants. Contentment defines us.
"Mommy, can I help you with anything?" Soteria often asked whenever she saw me busy at home or in the shop. Her mere presence brought relief during challenging times. Her glowing caramel skin, big brown eyes, tiny ears, beautiful jet black natural long hair resembling a full-blown afro wig, little structured nose, and cute lips that lit up the room when she smiled created an aura of peace and sweetness.
My four-year-old daughter and I would share moments in the kitchen after her school. I cherished watching her giggle and talk about her friends, Tiffany and Ada. However, a day arrived when Soteria returned from school looking dull, her eyes red as if she had been crying. This was different from her usual moods.
"Soteria, what happened?" I inquired, but she remained silent, looking down at her shoes.
"Soteria, my sweet baby, please tell mommy what happened." I squatted, gently lifting her chin, yet she stood there, moved to tears but saying nothing.
From then on, she withdrew, not uttering a word. Concerned, I contacted the school, questioned her friends, sought guidance from our pastor, but Soteria refused to disclose what troubled her. She stopped smiling, had nightmares, and would scream in the night. Her dad and I were left perplexed and worried as this continued for two weeks until one day.
What do you think is wrong with Soteria?
What will you have done as Soteria's parents?
