JOURNALISM IN A RAPIDLY-CHANGING WORLD
By: Chukwuemeka Oluka

Make no mistake; Journalism can be seen as the process of gathering and presenting factual information. This implies that journalism relies on a working culture that inspires and guarantees this factual basis.

Before the invention of the printing press in the 18th century, the approach of news dissemination was by word of mouth. This approach was highly unreliable and later faded away after the printing press came on board. Even before the advent of radio and television in the 20th century and the internet in the 21st century, the printing press ensured the primary medium of journalism was the newspapers. Safe it is to say then, that the newspapers can be seen as the taproot of modern journalism.

Some decades after the newspapers got foothold, journalism became reinvented by technology. The emergence of technology changed the dynamics of news gathering and reporting so much so that it quickly fast-tracked all aspects of the process, making the news timelier and more relevant. Even the ways societies communicate, could not be addressed without addressing the fast-moving pace of technology. New technologies and even the new media behaviours all challenged the status quo at the time, and changed the rules of the game. Journalism itself changed, because, the evolution of the media - both print and electronic through technology, had strong impact on the developments in the field of journalistic innovation.

Today, the internet has launched journalism into an entirely new digital age, providing readers real-time information, and stories that appeal to their interests. Interestingly, the internet is not going to relent any time soon.

It is therefore instructive that as a new media and social media experience birthed by the internet takes full shape, the identity of journalism must be seen as dynamic; dynamic because there remains an emerging media culture where consumers of information are also the producers of public information. Thus, Journalists should rely on a more collaborative, open, responsive and interactive journalistic culture. This is the only way journalists can adapt to the fast and changing world of a modern society characterized by uncertainties and change.

In conclusion, the tenets of journalism alongside the place of journalism in a rapidly-changing world will remain steadfast. No matter how long time proceeds, Journalism promises to continue to stand tall in its resolve to stay ethical, adaptive, factual and credible, no matter the circumstances.
