The Brotherhood is one unique quality that is deeply rooted in the values of the Igbo culture. Brotherhood in Igbo land is a deeply ingrained concept that shapes many aspects of Igbo culture and society. From the family unit to the wider community, the idea of brotherhood permeates the daily lives of Igbo people.
At the heart of Igbo brotherhood is the idea of "Umunna," which means "family" or "clan." This concept refers to the strong bond between male members of a family, who are expected to support and care for one another. From an early age, Igbo boys are taught to value and respect their brothers, and to put the needs of the family before their own. This sense of brotherhood extends beyond the immediate family to the wider community. In Igbo culture, there is a strong sense of community responsibility and solidarity. If one member of the community is in need, it is the duty of the others to come together and provide support. This practice is known as "Iwa-Akwa," and it reinforces the bonds of brotherhood between community members.
