The crisis rocking the Peoples’ Democratic Party took another fiery turn today as the factional National Executive Committee loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ratified the expulsion of Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State.
The committee also expelled former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Adolphus Wabara; former National Vice Chairman of the party, Bode George, and the recently elected party National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki.
A communiqué from the meeting, read by National Secretary Sam Anyanwu, stated that the committee received the report of the Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, detailing breaches of Articles 58(1) and 59(1), including anti-party activities, disobedience to court orders, and conduct bringing the party into disrepute.
Meanwhile, a former spokesman for the Party's presidential campaign council, Umar Sani, has thrown his support behind the party’s decision to expel Nyesom Wike and other key figures, describing the disciplinary action as better late than never.
Sani also affirmed the legality of the party’s just-concluded national elective convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, insisting that the convention was legally sound.
Featuring on a televised show, he further dismissed criticisms suggesting the party acted too slowly in disciplining Wike and others, explaining that the party had initially sought a family resolution through an instituted committee.
Sani emphasized that the electoral body’s presence is not mandatory for a party convention, stressing that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s presence or absence does not validate or invalidate a party convention.
In the grand turn of things, the National Chairman of the Party, Kabiru Turaki, has appealed to the President of the United States, Donald Trump and the international community to intervene in Nigeria’s political climate, warning that the country’s democracy is under threat.
Speaking to journalists before the party faction he leads attempted to hold a National Executive Committee meeting, Turaki accused the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, of leading armed thugs with the alleged backing of police officers to disrupt party activities.
Turaki said the party leaders are ready to pay the ultimate price to protect the country’s democracy, saying the situation has reached a level that requires global intervention.
