Colonial Grandeur Meets Urban Culture: Inside Nairobi's McMillan Memorial Library

Tucked in the bustling heart of Nairobi along Banda Street is one of Kenya’s oldest and most historically rich buildings—the McMillan Memorial Library. Built in 1931 in memory of American philanthropist Sir William Northrup McMillan, this neoclassical treasure was one of the only public libraries in colonial sub-Saharan Africa accessible to Europeans. Today, it stands as a monument to both Kenya's colonial past and its vibrant intellectual future.

From the moment you walk through its imposing Corinthian columns and into the lofty reading rooms, you’re struck by the quiet grandeur of the structure. The high ceilings, wooden bookshelves, and marble floors echo with the stories of nearly a century of readers, researchers, and revolutionaries. The building’s design borrows from Greco-Roman architecture, making it as much a visual marvel as a literary one.

But McMillan is more than a time capsule. In recent years, it has undergone revitalization through Book Bunk, a local non-profit working to restore and digitize the library’s collection, open up its public spaces, and celebrate Nairobi’s literary culture. Live readings, exhibitions, book clubs, and archival projects now blend with the old-world charm of the place.

Tourist Tips:

Visit during weekdays when it’s quietest for a more immersive experience.

Don't miss the restored archives and rare book section—it gives insights into Nairobi’s literary and political history.

Bring a notebook; the serene environment is perfect for journaling or sketching.

Photography is allowed in most areas, so bring your camera to capture the architectural details.

Look out for upcoming public events—many are free and open to visitors.
