Perched majestically on Namirembe Hill in Kampala, Bulange is more than just a building—it’s the political and cultural nerve center of the Buganda Kingdom. Built in the late 1950s, Bulange houses the Lukiiko, the kingdom’s parliament, as well as the offices of the Kabaka (king) and his prime minister, the Katikkiro. Its architecture is rich with symbolism and reflects deep cultural beliefs—for instance, it has just one floor to ensure no one literally sits above the Kabaka.

Bulange is a hub where Buganda’s clan leaders, youth, and royal appointees come together to discuss matters of tradition, culture, and development within the kingdom. Although it functions as a parliamentary space, Bulange deals exclusively with kingdom affairs rather than Uganda’s national government.

Visitors to Bulange get to explore the history and cultural significance of Buganda’s governance system. Intricate symbols representing the kingdom’s 56 clans decorate the building, and local guides can unravel the rich stories behind them. If you visit, dress modestly and be prepared to respect any photography restrictions.

Situated just a few kilometers from Kampala’s city center, Bulange is close to other cultural landmarks like the Mengo Palace and Kasubi Tombs, making it easy to combine your visit into a deeper exploration of Buganda’s heritage.

If you want to feel the pulse of Buganda’s living traditions and political legacy, Bulange is a must-see landmark that brings history and culture vividly to life.
