Bio-Ken Snake Farm is located just outside Watamu on the Gede–Watamu Road and stands as the largest serpentarium in East Africa, housing over 260 snakes across 127 species . Established by herpetologist James Ashe in 1980, the farm has evolved into a leading research center specializing in venom extraction and antivenom production, distributing life-saving antidotes regionally .

Visitors can witness the fascinating venom-milking demonstration each morning, where expert staff extract venom to develop specific antivenoms for species like black mambas, puff adders, and spitting cobras . Beyond snakes, the farm’s enclosures showcase reptiles and amphibians such as chameleons, geckos, terrapins, and crocodiles, providing insight into coastal Kenya’s rich herpetofauna .

As part of its conservation mission, Bio-Ken offers free snake-removal services and conducts community outreach and educational seminars on snakebite prevention and ecological importance . Collaborative research projects with global herpetology networks and support from the Taylor Ashe Antivenom Foundation ensure that Bio-Ken remains at the forefront of snakebite research and public health initiatives .

Visitor Information & Tips

Operating daily from 10:00 to 17:00, the farm is a 5-minute drive from Watamu town, accessible via local taxis or arranged tours; early arrival before 11:00 is recommended to catch the venom-milking session .

Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and sun protection, and bring a camera with a zoom lens to safely photograph the reptiles; guided safaris to nearby Gede and Jimbe forests can be arranged on-site for natural habitat exploration . For the best experience, combine your visit with a cultural tour of local fishing villages to understand the human–snake coexistence and support community-led conservation efforts .
