Becoming by Michelle Obama
This is not a political book. I need to say that first because the name Obama makes people choose sides before they open the cover.
This is a book about a girl from the South Side of Chicago who was told, by a guidance counsellor, that she was not Princeton material. She went to Princeton. Then Harvard Law. Then the White House. And the book is honest about every single step, including the ones that hurt.
What surprised me most was the marriage section. She writes about couples therapy with the candour of someone who decided that being helpful was more important than being perfect. The First Lady of the United States went to marriage counselling and told the world about it. That is leadership.
Who should read this: women who are building something and wondering if the cost is worth it. Men who want to understand what their wives carry. Anyone who has ever been underestimated.
Rating: 9/10. The best memoir of the last decade.
