DAY 17 - THE OLD OYO EMPIRE, OYO STATE, NIGERIA
Now a park, the Old OYO Empire used to be a city. It was a major cultural and historical centre in yesteryears until it was abandoned in 1935.
The ruins of Old Oyo include:
Palace: The palace of the Oba, or ruler, was called the Aafin.
Oja-Oba: The Oba's market.
Akesan market: A 500 m square market where traders set up booths.
Water reservoir: A large reservoir to the south of the palace.
Earthen wall: An enormous wall with 17 gates for defense.
Today, it has become a national park and a place of inspiration to many. It is one of the most astonishing places of tourists attractions.
